0:00
Welcome. So today I did want to make a little bit of a different video just kind of talking about this specific headset
0:08
Now I do have the meta quest 2. And I do want to talk about this specifically, but I have the Quest 2 just as a comparison
0:22
because it's kind of what some people might be replacing it with, meaning the quest with this
0:30
And there is a couple things that Quest does undeniably significantly better
0:36
It's like just generations ahead compared to this one. So I'm going to for now move this out of the way and focus on this one and just the design aesthetics
0:48
So just peel that off just so we can see. There we go. So you can see this nice white-on-black design
0:57
And this looks really clean. I do like this a lot and it does remind me kind of of apple
1:05
when it still used to be good which is a good thing
1:11
the design language here is I would consider really nice as you probably might be also aware
1:16
there will be a pro version of this which will have instead of a black plate it will have a gold one
1:21
and I do from pictures I also think that that one looks nice
1:25
it's a simple thing it's not like it really matters in terms of performance and comfort, but it's still going to be laying on your desk
1:33
and I do think it looks quite nice. Now, second thing in terms of the design is the battery placement, which is at the back
1:44
Unlike the quest, which has it at the front, everything, and you have this lousy trash strap
1:52
Here you have it divided, so hardware and power. And it works really nicely
1:59
It does provide you with this balance, so if I hold it like here, you can see hopefully that it is basically being held in the middle
2:08
It doesn't just sag towards downside at the front. So there we go
2:15
You can see the balance here is really nice. And overall, the headset is relatively light
2:24
It feels lighter than the quest, though I don't have a way
2:29
here to actually check it out to be more precise about it but I in general it's a light
2:36
now in terms of the design faceplate and just the front is pretty nice because we have
2:46
the pancake lenses so you can see in terms of if I take this off here is our little
2:54
faceplate so small design here and you can see in terms of if I pick this off here and you
2:59
see that the actual like size of this is relatively small we compare that to
3:05
quest if I take the little strap as well I can see them side by side now and obviously
3:16
the difference here is quite substantial so maybe like this I'm not exactly
3:25
sure how to place it one up next to another but you can
3:29
see that the entire headset right here is relatively slim compared to this girth right here
3:36
And also at the front you don't have as much weight so it doesn't really sag on your face
3:40
The front doesn't create like this annoying pressure which is another bonus
3:46
Now when this kind of falls off in my opinion in terms of the design and I guess comfort here
3:54
would be right here with the faceplate. So just move that out
3:59
by the way. So right here, I can see this kind of like weird, weirdness
4:03
This is nice in general if you wear glasses, because it provides space for the glasses. It doesn't like just pinch them kind of like
4:11
this faceplate would. Glasses do kind of get stuck in here. Here you have enough space so they don't, which is really nice
4:21
Like I said, if you're wearing glasses. But where isn't nice is when you're wearing the headset
4:26
And what it does here is create light leakage. Now, from what I'm aware, I am not the only one with a face
4:36
that basically isn't filling the entire size of this. And for me, even though I might be in a relatively dark environment
4:49
it creates enough light leakage to the point that I can see reflections
4:53
off of the actual lens at the side right here, of the environment, the actual world, behind me
5:01
And it isn't the best thing. So nice for glasses, not so nice in general
5:08
It should be a little bit tighter packed, which would also fix another problem that at least I'm having
5:14
which is to the fact that when I have this on, most of the pressure that I have is basically right here on my forehead
5:26
So this is primarily the only place where I feel any kind of like rest from the device where it presses on
5:34
And considering this is an entire faceplate pad it all around, I don't get to use this side at all and the bottom side at all
5:42
And it creates massive pressure just at this point right here to the point that after like an hour it becomes really uncomfortable
5:50
And it's not because of the weight. It's just because of the fact that I need to clamp it so it doesn't like
5:56
move around and it's only going to be clamping it right here and this pad in general isn't
6:03
necessarily super soft it is quite hard compared to something like this this feels a little bit softer
6:11
but also the design is much better so quest have damn these hair everywhere uh so the quest has a
6:22
much better fitted face plate it fits way better to the face to the point that it
6:26
covers most of your face with pressure, all these all around your eyes
6:31
So at the forehead, the sides as well, along with bottom like your cheekbones
6:36
which is a benefit when you have something that is clamping to your face with some like pressure
6:44
Which this, because of it, it's a little bit of a downgrade
6:50
And it's honestly the only problem that I would say I have with the headset itself
6:56
as a design-wise and comfort-wise. Other than that, if I could find a replacement
7:03
for instance from like a VR cover for this, this would have been freaking fantastic
7:09
But as of right now, this kind of design of the faceplate creates problems
7:16
that aren't comfortable for me. And one more thing added for me
7:21
I don't know, maybe I have a huge nose or whatever, but the way I need to put on the headset
7:26
creates massive pressure where my nose is resting right here and not in a comfortable way
7:33
like a glasses would so the way or the reason this happens is if I put this on
7:39
there's just magnetically attached I think not much force needed so anyway
7:48
once the headset is on my face I need to shift it a little bit
7:53
to like the, what is it? To the downside. So for some reason, I feel like when I'm looking somewhere around this area, it's not as clean
8:07
So you need to shift it about like right here. And because of this, my nose start resting in this place right over here and it isn't very comfortable
8:15
Additional problem is with the strap right here where it moves up, right
8:21
But it won't move down. So I could possibly shift it, for instance, for the cheekbones to rest on my cheeks, more
8:32
If I could, you know, twist it a little bit further down
8:36
It could hopefully solve that problem. It would probably even amplify the problem with the nose right here and the clearance because of it
8:45
But at least it would be a little bit more comfortable here. Or, well, it would remove the pressure most of it from here
8:53
and spread it more evenly around. So that one of the design problems Now when it comes down to comparing it to the quest if you ever wore this thing it uncomfortable I would say
9:08
It's not uncomfortable for the first like 20 minutes that you wear, but then it does create the pressure just because of the face plate
9:16
always pressing or sandwiching your face with straps. I have not used the elite strap
9:23
but from what I've seen a lot of people upgraded to it
9:27
I don't really own a quest so this is here just a showcase But from what I've seen the elite strap does mitigate some of this problem because it's designed kind of similarly to this
9:40
But like I said, I don't have it so not really a way to compare it
9:47
But if we compare just the headset itself as it comes The headset doesn't come with a leaked strap, so I'm not going to really talk about it as though it would be here and
9:57
And generally, in this case, the quest is less comfortable in general
10:03
This one, in terms of comfort, is relatively comfortable. I can wear it longer, but it creates a bigger problem with just a pressure in a single area
10:12
which is, in my opinion, bad. Now, I did already look into this, if anybody's curious
10:18
And for instance, on a thingyverse, you can find already like 3D designs for faceplates
10:25
that will be replacing this one and you can then slap a, for instance
10:29
VR cover on it with a more comfortable pad and hopefully that could
10:33
solve some of the problems that I might be having or you as well depending
10:40
So yeah. Now, let's talk about next thing, which is the performance
10:45
of this hardware. So, we're running XR2 chipset, which is the same one in Quest
10:53
Though Quest has its own on software that it's running and this is running on Android
10:59
So what this allows you to do actually is install normal APKs
11:04
So you can go to like APK Pure, download apps, load them here just from like a USB stick like this one
11:11
the card. And you can install apps, no problem. It works fine
11:17
Cracked, none. Primarily you would have to download it from like a third party
11:21
like APK Pure, which means all of them are like side loaded
11:25
The reason for this is we don't have a Play Store on this device
11:29
So you can install APK files, which are from Play Store, but you don't have access to Play Store
11:34
So you need to sideload them. And one problem with the APK support is they usually opt into a normal kind of phone orientation
11:47
So even though you have a wide view and complete 3D environment, you have a single window kind of like this one where you have your
11:54
For instance, application open and it's visible just in this kind of format, just straight up
12:01
So you don't get this cinematic view that you probably might want to see
12:06
For instance, apps like Discord are just stuck in the portrait mode
12:14
And obviously Discord would have been way better suited for landscape. And one more thing is you cannot resize them and you cannot have multiple apps open
12:24
on the device, no matter what the app is. If it's APK or a native one
12:30
you will always have one open and you can just swap between them. So that's where the portion
12:37
that I mentioned before, that Quest does significantly better. It's the software
12:43
Software on Quest is so far ahead that it's not even comparable, I would say
12:51
So here you can just kind of open up, so you have a little dock. with apps and I just call it that
12:58
There's a couple more features. Obviously, you have hand tracking. Let's not talk about it
13:02
It's completely atrocious. Here you also have hand tracking. It's working pretty good
13:08
It does have like a little wonkiness to it, but compared to this
13:13
this hand tracking just kind of completely efts up. The most annoying part when you enable it
13:19
sometimes you will grab a controller and it will detect your hands still
13:23
not switch to the controller and the because part of your hand
13:27
is just hidden by the controller the interface for the hand tracking just kind of goes wibbly wobbly everywhere
13:33
and just completely freaks out what is happening which is really just kind of off-putting and
13:41
the control or the way you control the environment using your hands is nice
13:48
in the quest you kind of do this kind of thing and you drag around
13:52
I can flip it over to go home. Here you kind of have a fist and you just do such a kind of motion like this
13:59
which is equivalent of just dragging, grabbing something. It's fine, though again, the headset
14:05
just kind of freaks out and doesn't really track correctly. The little pointer just kind of
14:10
goes everywhere. Most of the time when you're trying to grab a page and, for instance
14:14
scroll from side to side, the lack of precision from it where it just kind of like shakes all around
14:21
because it can't really detect your hand fully. If you're trying to go side to side
14:26
because of the shake, it just starts going up and down. And you need to let it go and then grab it again
14:31
and try to go from side to side. It's quite annoying. Here, you don't have that big of a problem with hand tracking
14:36
It works pretty good. Another thing you can do is have multiple apps open
14:40
which, again, pretty nice. One more thing that a quest has over just every other competition
14:46
is the implementation of, for instance, the keyboard. so if you have a supported keyboard, you can have it rendered into the actual environment
14:55
and just set up like a desk where you can have multiple windows open and use your keyboard, see it in front of you
15:03
and have it physically on your desk as an example. Here we have very limited functionality of the actual environment and the software side
15:13
So software side needs decent amount of work on here to be to come
15:20
like relatively close to this. This is one of the biggest downsides of the
15:25
PICO4, the software side. And if the software side would improve, boy oh boy would this be an outstanding
15:33
device. Just a simple idea that you can use your normal apps that you have
15:39
like on your Android on this device allows you to have virtually like a virtual world where you can
15:46
still do everything that you normally do on your phone, but just on a much bigger
15:50
your screen, you can watch Netflix videos, whatever the heck you want. It's accessible here. It's
15:54
easy and without a problem. But what it's holding it back is the software that is running it and the
16:01
limitations of it as a lack of, for instance, multi-app support that you would have two apps
16:07
open or resizing of those apps. It could be great, but it's a locking at the moment
16:16
So, there we go. Now, next thing, let's touch upon the control
16:20
So here we have a Pico controller. In terms of tracking, I haven't encountered any problems
16:28
Also, if you have two of them and you're using them, rarely will you ever encounter that you hit the rings together
16:36
Like right now, kind of touch them at the bottom, but still you're already too close, I would say
16:41
And if you shift it a little bit so you can get it closer, again, your fingers collide together
16:47
So that's nice. So that's nice. Obviously, here you do have a little bit of a, you know
16:55
part that kind of prevents you from getting closer. But I don't think in VR you will ever have the need
17:01
When it comes on, for instance, like reloading guns. When you grab it, for instance, if you would imagine that there is a gun right here
17:07
you can grab it no problem. You will never interfere with it. I never had a problem
17:13
But where I do have a problem is with the actual shape of the controller
17:17
or the placement of the buttons, how far apart. So at the first glance, it looks fine
17:23
But if you want to have your finger on both of the buttons
17:27
so the A and B, as you normally do, and you're right here, your thumb
17:32
you'll see that my middle finger is misplaced from the grip, like quite severely misplaced
17:42
Now, if I fix this up so I can grip it correctly, it would be kind of like this right so now this would be the correct kind of way of
17:52
holding it and they're comfortable but I can see that my finger is now like completely
17:57
over the buttons like they just designed for like children hands so I have to do this kind of like weird you know know movement Just not very comfortable one where I just need to shift just entire like hand controller
18:14
to get into it. Again here, not the best. When we compare it to Quest controller, which is almost
18:23
the same as, for instance, like Rift, Rift S and so on, more comfortable, way better spaced
18:30
so holding it normally thumb over both of the fingers or over both of the buttons
18:38
trying to kind of show it but you can basically see it
18:42
and obviously thumbstick again perfectly positioned the oculus button a little bit out of the way
18:50
you do need to shift it and shift your hand a little bit but it's obviously the button that you're not going to be using
18:55
in game for any actual like reason So in general, this is better
19:01
Also, when gripping, I don't need to grip it in a weird way where I also press the trigger here
19:10
For some reason, when gripping it, I feel like I don't have enough space and, like, I don't know, press it a little bit, the actual trigger
19:20
And one more thing, the trigger right here is huge. So if you compare it to these, side by side they don't seem that much different
19:28
but I don't know, somehow holding it, I feel the edge of the trigger, just kind of digging right here
19:36
I mean, digging not like an uncomfortable way, but I just feel it a little bit too early, I would say
19:42
On the quest, it's shaped, you can see it, like this, so it accommodates for your finger to the point that it doesn't feel like it's just, you know, misplaced or anything
19:55
So Quest in terms of the comfort of the controller does the design of it
20:00
Wends, I just, I don't really like the little rings around it
20:04
They're not the best thing. These seem a little bit better, but the controller itself is not shaped correctly, I would say
20:15
So it needs a little bit more work. Now one more thing, talking about the controller, is the battery
20:20
So unlike the Quest, which has only one battery, whip it out
20:27
There we go. These ones have two. Now, Quest did fix a problem where, for instance
20:33
if you were playing Beatsaber and you're doing some violent movements, it would shift the battery and disconnect the controller
20:39
They shifted with this little spring right here, a magnet, whatever this is
20:44
You can see it. So it pushes the battery in place and does it pretty firmly
20:50
There we go. So you don't have that problem anymore. Now on the Pico, they solved it
20:58
Just take this out. By creating this entire drawer for battery. Again, the battery doesn't..
21:06
I haven't played Beat Sabre on here. I don't have to do it through PCVR
21:11
But I haven't encountered any disconnections right now. And in general, this works well
21:17
It has two batteries, so it has a little bit more weight to it. But the design of it is..
21:23
pretty good i would say in terms of the battery wise and that's almost everything i have to say
21:31
one last thing which is i'll be talking as a comparison between pcvr i guess and and non-PCvr as a game
21:42
so i played on here the after the fall which uh if you order this headset i believe it from like if you
21:52
activated more precisely from 24th to the 30th you get four free games O shapes after the fall
21:59
and some two other games which I don't remember the names which isn't necessarily important
22:03
I played after the fall because this is one of the games that I also played on PC and I own it there
22:07
so it gave me a good comparison from what I've already experienced and one thing that I'll
22:15
mention is the performance was decent but I did encounter stuttering in the game
22:26
I'm not sure if this is the same case for Quest. I haven't played it
22:30
Like I said, I don't only use Quest. I don't own one. So I can't compare it, but obviously on the PC
22:36
I didn't have any kind of stuttering. Here, throughout like the entire run, one of the runs
22:43
harvest runs, he encountered maybe like six to ten freezes, or just kind of like
22:48
just freezes up for a brief, moment and then just resumes. When the game is running smoothly and then has like occasional freezes in VR, it is
22:57
really noticeable. So I'm not sure if this is some software or the hardware isn't keeping up
23:03
I can't imagine why the hardware wouldn't be keeping up considering the game already looks atrocious
23:10
Look, I'm not going to sugarcoat it as a person that came from PC
23:14
The textures are basically nonexistent there. And I might be a little bit spoiled
23:21
obviously I use PC for VR primarily. So this is like a massive downgrade to me
23:28
If you are used to playing on this kind of hardware, more mobile one, where everything is integrated
23:33
where you don't need an expensive PC, which is totally understandable, obviously that that's fine
23:39
What isn't fine is that freezing app, I would say. That is like a massive problem that might make people just nauseated
23:46
So I just wanted to point it out. Now I haven't tested any other games, so I don't know if this is a game problem
23:53
a hardware problem or software problem. So not much insight here for you
24:01
And I did want to touch upon one more thing, which was PCVR
24:06
or using this with PCVR. So my main headset, which I've been using for several years now
24:15
would be the Rift S. it's exclusively just PCBR wired one so I'm looking constantly for something to replace it
24:24
and one of the benefits of that is the massive comfort that I have from it
24:30
it has the little face shield right here where most of the weight of the headset and glamping
24:35
force is distributed on your top of your forehead removing most of the pressure that we have
24:41
from here meaning like your forehead a little bit lower like above your eyes your cheeks
24:46
and it just places it right above your forehead, distribute it nicely
24:52
just like this entire kind of thing that calms onto your top of your head
24:57
Pretty nice kind of, I think it's called Halo, or whatever they're naming it
25:01
but it's really nice. I do like it myself, and it's one of those things that I think meta did bring back
25:09
with the Quest Pro, but obviously that device is just ludicrously expensive
25:14
and not really designed for a typical user. So this one kind of loses in terms of comfort
25:22
what I've been using generally. But where it does surprise me is the streaming quality
25:30
Now I tested this one as well for PCDR. I tested it both wirelessly
25:36
That's kind of the purpose of these. So if I'm buying a headset that can do wireless or wired
25:43
I would prefer to do wireless because it's supposed to be an upgrade
25:46
to something that I've already been always running on a wire. And from what I experienced, the Quest 2
25:55
wirelessly, at like, best scenario, where a computer was plugged in with a cable
26:00
I was running a 5 gigahertz connection between them. The connection was stable and just looked decent
26:10
Or, well, it didn't really look decent. stable and resolution was okay
26:14
but the quality of the stream was lacking. It honestly didn't feel much of an upgrade
26:22
from the Rift S that I typically use. So it kind of defeats the purpose
26:28
to get this device for like PC VR exclusively which is what I tend to do
26:34
Number because it loses comfort obviously. It has high resolution but it doesn't utilize it correctly with
26:40
with the stream quality. On a cable-wise, it's better, but then I might as well just use my Rift test
26:48
which is more comfortable if I have to use a cable. And I don't have to worry about battery
26:53
just, I believe, slowly draining. This one on the other side has a high resolution
26:59
This is a 2160 by 2160 per eye, so resolution here is significantly higher but again it does wireless streaming and it also utilizes a linked cable though wireless streaming here I cannot say it bad
27:16
Visually, it's significantly better than the Quest and significantly better than my Rift
27:20
S would normally show me. So it is already an upgrade in terms of visuals
27:26
And the fact that you don't need that cable, it just adds to it
27:29
And I was running it at improved resolution. set in SteamVR to render it or not Steam VR you can set it in their like link assistant
27:40
application or whatever it's called to do a ultra HD resolution and it doesn't refer to ultra
27:49
HD as a resolution of this headset it does upscaling so it renders it instead of at 2160 it renders it
27:58
at 20 I think 640 or something like that per eye which is a
28:04
high resolution than this is and this is significantly more more straining on your
28:09
hardware than the 2160 by 2160 which is already a high resolution so it
28:16
creates a it creates a stream that is over the quality of this hardware to kind of
28:24
remove some or improve the quality of it and it still runs at 90 hertz if your
28:30
hardware obviously can support it and latency was at like 30 milliseconds, I believe. So it was
28:36
in slower games. You can play Half-Life Alex without a problem wirelessly and stupid resolution
28:45
Obviously, if you lower it down, you might have a better latency. And obviously
28:51
it would be less straining on your device. And you can still run it at a full resolution
28:55
of this, which would be, I believe they call it just like HD resolution, which I didn't
29:01
check it by I assume it would be the resolution of the headset itself. And you also have the choice to switch between 72 Hertz, which is the default state of this headset, to 90
29:12
Now, this is where Quest 2 also has a heads-up. We do have a default of 72
29:19
We can do 90 or even 120 on here. We don't have 120 here
29:25
We just pick at 90, which is also what Quest Pro, which is the stupidly expensive one, pick that
29:34
So there we go. Now, in terms of PCVR, it's, I would say, pretty good experience
29:42
I haven't had problems, but from what I've heard, people still prefer to use a virtual desktop
29:48
So if you want to do that, you wouldn't need to buy it separately if you already own it on like Quest
29:54
Again, you need to buy it here. I haven't tested virtual desktop here if it works better
30:00
But some people just stand by it that it's significantly better. so you could test it out if you don't like it
30:06
I guess you could probably try to return it. I do think they have a return policy here
30:10
So check it out. If they do, have return policy. Get it
30:16
If you don't like it, return it. Now, what else is there to say
30:23
I'm going to touch upon one more thing or two more things, if I remember what the second one that I wanted to talk about was
30:28
which is the lenses. So obviously we have the pancake lenses, but they have a motorized IPD adjustment
30:36
Now, for me, one of the things with motorized IPD adjustment was it's okay
30:41
though I don't really see much of a difference in adjusting it. They have like this weird circle and then like a couple bigger circles around that
30:50
And it tells you to adjust it until the image is clear. I mean, if you're looking through lenses correctly, no matter what the IPD will be
30:57
it's usually clear so that can spend for me between like, 50 something or 58 I believe all the way to like 68 which is
31:08
Not comfortable to look at but in old cases I can see it clearly so the IPD adjustment is kind of for me
31:16
I could never figure out what the correct placement is about what I did figure out if I lower it too much the the lenses get too close and they pinch my nose
31:26
It's just kind of hilarious So there we go and I know what I wanted to say last, which is the existence or knowledge of upcoming PICO4 Pro
31:44
So this headset is already pretty good. And if you don't have option to wait for anything newer, then it's a really good pickup
31:54
Now, it might not be as good, for instance, as Quest in terms of software
31:59
In terms of hardware, I would say it's as good, if not better, because of the pancake lenses
32:06
And if you're wondering or thinking about picking up this, maybe waiting
32:10
I'm going to just kind of give you an insight on what you could be waiting for
32:15
So you already know everything about this. PICO4 Pro is basically all of this that you have for a little bit higher price tag
32:24
but it has eye tracking. It will use that eye tracking to automatically adjust IPD for you
32:29
And also, if you're using your headset, also for PCVR, if you have an RTX, GPU as an example
32:37
you can enable SSVR, which allows you to utilize foviated rendering, meaning the game will be rendered fully only where you're looking at
32:47
removing massive amounts of strain from your GPU. Now, you do need an RTX for it, but it should work pretty well
32:55
And obviously, some games might be utilizing that as well in the future, meaning you can get way more out of the XR2 chip that you do right now
33:04
Now, there will also be released a Quest 3 or whatever will be the name of it
33:11
which leaks suggest it will be somewhere in the year 2023. So I would presume it's going to be at the end of it at the next like meta-connect conference
33:26
kind of like the Quest Pro was released now so it's still close to a year
33:33
till the third Oculus Quest 3 releases though Quest 3 leaks suggest it will not have eye tracking
33:45
which is a massive bomber I would say but it will be running a newer processor
33:49
the Snapdragon XR 2 gen 2 so it should be an upgraded
33:56
version of it a better version newer one so yeah so those are the two headsets that would probably
34:04
consider i will probably be leaning towards the pico4 pro just because i really want that eye
34:12
tracking which is something that meta included in their stupidly expensive headset but decided to
34:18
i guess not include in the quest three which i like i said these are just rumors
34:26
It might be that meta includes it. I have no clue. So like I said, take it with a grain of salt
34:33
These are all just rumors, leaks. But what isn't a leak is that PICO4 Pro will be coming with a headset that has eye tracking
34:42
So that is something that I know for sure, and that is something that I'll be interested in
34:47
Now, with this being said, at the end of the day, it really depends on probably what you already had
34:54
if you have a massive library in your quest then you probably will be waiting for the new quest
35:00
which is unfortunate and the library here of games is smaller if you're using PC VR you obviously get the benefit
35:08
of entire library of PC but generally library is smaller on the headset itself
35:13
but to finish this off the choice which headset you prefer as completely up to you I just wanted to give my
35:22
thoughts on these two devices because at the moment they're kind of competing against each other. Some people probably
35:28
think that one is a quest killer or that the other one is still the best headset. I would argue that
35:35
both headsets cater to different markets or different people. They will both have some benefits and
35:43
drawbacks each. So at the end of the day, it really depends on what you're looking for. And I just wanted
35:49
to present the benefits and drawbacks. So you can make a more educated decision right here
