Welcome, and follow me as a Nokia XR21 and today I will show you a couple tweaks and tricks you can do on this phone
0:15
So, let's just get straight into it. Now, I'll be completely honest, these won't be very glamorous, but this phone isn't necessarily boasting any kind of great features
0:25
so I guess we need to tone down our expectations to the stock Android. Now, with that being said, let's start off by opening up our settings, and in here I'm going to begin by navigating into the display section
0:37
where we will have our refresh rate, so we have screen refresh rate, we have adaptive or standard. Now, the adaptive will be the smoother option, it also gives you this nice animation
0:49
as a visual indication on how it affects it, so this is a pretty good way to see it. Now, with that being said, it does say that the refresh rate will be up to 120 Hz, but it doesn't really specify if it drops it lower
1:06
it says up to, but yeah, so, because it doesn't specify, we're gonna check it out. So I'm gonna navigate into the About Phone section, and then find Build Number, there we go, tap on it
1:20
enable developer options, I'm gonna go back, system, developer options, and here we're looking for refresh rate. There we go, show refresh rate. 120, 60
1:45
So it does drop down to 60, nothing really lower than that, I did expect that, but it's so nice that it changes it. I'm gonna keep it on the screen just so you can kinda see how that works
1:56
So whenever you start doing anything on the screen, it automatically switches to 120, and then once it thinks that you're not gonna be moving, maybe you're reading something, it drops it down to 60 to preserve battery
2:09
Now, going back to the display and refresh rate, you also have the other option, the standard, when enabled, this will obviously permanently keep it at 60, so this will be, if you tend to use your device quite often, meaning the display specifically, have it on for a prolonged time
2:26
then you might want to enable the standard, this will give you a better battery life over the adaptive. Adaptive will be good if you just tend to check out the phone, read something, and then move again
2:38
It will be nice and smooth, will try to give you good battery life, but when it comes down to straight up battery life, and if you're just gonna be scrolling through text or something like that, then you probably want to have it set on standard
2:53
which will allow your device to last a little bit longer. Now, moving on, another thing that I want to show, which is also in developer options, which is also one of the reasons why I enabled it, we're gonna navigate into the developer options right here, is the animation speeds
3:08
Let me just close the door. In here, we're gonna scroll down a little bit past halfway, and we're looking for, there we go, a window animation scale, transition animation scale, and animation duration scale
3:26
Now, each one of these windows corresponds to a different kind of animation, so I'm gonna start with the first one, which is window animation scale
3:33
When you click on this, it will open up a window, which the speed at which it opens, I can define right here
3:41
As an example, if I select it to be off, now when you click on it, it automatically just pops into view
3:48
I can also make it twice as fast, so it will still be animated, but it will be significantly faster in opening it up
3:54
Then we have transition animation scale and animation duration scale. I would probably be changing these both together
4:02
They do correspond to a couple different animations, so one of them would be, for instance, representing animation of closing and the swipe out
4:12
recent, zooming in, swiping to the other page where it just swipes away
4:19
These all will correspond to, the two settings will correspond to a bunch of these animations right here that you've just seen
4:26
I recommend changing it to half the speed or maybe even off if you want to have instantaneous changes
4:32
Though, with off animations, some things might be a little bit janky because, for instance, when you go into here, like the recent
4:41
when you let go, it does zoom out. Without animation, it just kind of glitches and just pops straight into this kind of view
4:51
even though it is defined in a way where you were holding it
4:56
Like I said, off might look sometimes a little bit odd, but still, it will be quicker without animations
5:04
For the best result, I recommend changing it to half speed, which is the 0.5
5:10
Now, moving on, we can navigate or we can go to the..
5:14
Let me just quickly go back to the main settings. We can go to accessibility
5:22
If we can find it, there we go, accessibility. Then we can navigate to system controls
5:31
That's where we will find our system navigation. Now, it is in a very weird place
5:38
If you are planning to change your navigation style, maybe from buttons to gestures or vice versa, that is where you can find it
5:44
Typically, it will be located somewhere easily accessible. Accessibility settings, contrary to the belief, doesn't usually contain most of the settings a typical person would be looking for
5:56
Anyway, that's where we have our navigations. I will be sticking with gesture navigation, but we also have this little gear icon right here
6:03
which in here will allow you to select the sensitivity of a back gesture, so this one
6:10
As you can see, when you swipe from the edge, it just shows you this arrow
6:14
When you start swiping either one of them, it will show you this blue bar
6:18
There we go. This defines where your finger needs to start off from and swipe out for the gestures to be registered as a gesture and not like a swipe to the side
6:31
If you have a problem where you just swipe from the side and it doesn't really recognize a gesture
6:36
you can increase the sensitivity to high, as an example, and this will now be more sensitive
6:43
It can be a little bit more inaccurate with the gesture, but it's a double-edged sword
6:49
so you might be trying to scroll through pictures, as an example, to the side
6:53
and you will just grab the screen and this will go back
6:57
Just keep that in mind. Now, moving on to the next option
7:03
It's going to be the wallpaper and style, or that's how this section is called
7:08
We're going to go back to the main settings, scroll up, and we have it right under the display
7:15
Here we have, obviously, the wallpaper, but let's not just touch upon that
7:19
We have a couple more interesting options below that. We have, for instance, color scheme for the device
7:26
These little colors right here, all of these, the bubbles and all that stuff
7:32
You can select it to be based on either color, and you can choose one, or based on the wallpaper
7:38
When you change it, for example, right now we have this kind of bluish tone. Let's just change it to something different
7:46
As you can see, it automatically adapted. I'm going to change it to both
7:56
Now, you can see that instead of blue, it's more on that reddish tone, or pinkish, to be honest
8:06
Going back in here, as you can see, it also changed the options that we have right here
8:13
We can change it to something else, a little bit more. I guess not more aggressive
8:17
It still doesn't really change the bubbles right here to be a little bit more vibrant
8:21
It's a little bit of a shame, but you do have the option. You can also swipe to the side. It gives you a couple of different color combinations that you can choose from
8:29
Pretty neat options for customizing your device. Below that, we have also dark theme
8:35
This is basically a dark mode right here that I can enable
8:39
I have themed icons, which will try to align all the icons to be basically the same looking, as you can see
8:48
This just makes the device look a little bit too bland for my taste, so I prefer the default ones
8:53
Obviously, if you want to have everything look uniformly, you can enable this, and it should do a pretty good job
9:00
It might sometimes fail, as I think there was right here. As you can see, it doesn't cover a bunch of these applications like Amazon, Booking, Express, whatever that is, Netflix
9:11
It doesn't always work with every application, but it tries to cover them up
9:18
Now, I do have one theory. Let's check this out. Nope, it's still screwed
9:25
The last thing that we have in here is the app grid for your home screen
9:32
This allows you to change how many apps can fit on the screen. It looks like it's actually set to the highest one by default
9:38
At least, I think that's how it is by default. Obviously, you can change it to have bigger icons, because the higher you go in scale, the bigger the icons are
9:50
For elderly people, you probably might want to change it to something like this, but for the typical person, I personally prefer the smallest one
9:58
It gives me the most minimalistic look for the device, so that's what I'm going to stick with
10:05
The last thing that I'm going to show is the screen splitting, which is a function on this device
10:11
To split screen two applications at the same time, you would open up both of them, or at least one
10:19
Let's say I want to split screen YouTube and Chrome. I'm going to open up Chrome
10:25
Disregard the fact that we don't have internet, that won't really matter. Now, we can go to Resend, tap on the app icon, and we have split screen
10:36
Whenever you split screen the first application, it will always go to the top. From there, you can choose an application from your Resend, or you can just swipe home
10:44
Or apparently not. I'm going to check it out. It looks like both applications actually need to be open at the same time, and then you pick both of them
11:00
That's how you would do it. Prior, you would be able to go home, and it would still keep the already split screened open application still visible here
11:11
You could just open up any kind of application from your home screen, but it looks like it doesn't seem to work like this on this specific device
11:19
Anyway, from here, you can use basically both applications at the same time
11:28
Wow, that was quick. That would be it. If you found this video helpful, don't forget to hit like, subscribe, and thanks for watching
